Abstract:

This research aimed to examine the relationship between fluent reading and fluent writing. Correlation research model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. 206 primary school 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students participated in the research. Students’ fluency reading skills were measured with texts appropriate to their levels; Then, the same students were given certain periods of time and their fluent writing and copying skills were measured and the relationship between these 3 skills was examined. According to the results of the research, a positive and significant relationship was found between the reading speeds of 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students and their fluent writing and copying skills at each grade level. The level of relationship between reading speed and fluent writing and copying skills of 2nd grade students was found to be higher than the level of relationship between these skills of 3rd and 4th grade students. Accordingly, while copying in writing is more closely related to reading speed in lower grades, this relationship partially decreases as the grade level increases. In addition, as students’ grade level increases, their reading speed, fluent writing and copying skills also increase.
