Abstract:

The pamphlet called “Risâle alâ risâle Ali Çelebi fi’d-deverân ve’r-raks” is an important document in terms of Ottoman law thought and institutions. Moreover, due to its moderationist insight about melody (tegannî) and descant (lahn) discussions it’s highly important. Unfortunately, with the names of Risâlefi’l-lahn ve’t-tegannî or el-Kavlü’lvasît beyne’l-ifrâtve’t-tefrît so farit has generally been thought to be written by Birgivî Mehmed Efendi but it has also been attributed to Çivizâde Mehmed Efendi and Ebussuûd Efendi by some researchers. However new researches and copies found recently verify that this pamphlet was written by Ibn Bahaeddin. This study aims to help review the related literature by removing the confusion about to whom it belongs through investigating, translating and evaluating the pamphlet.
