Sibirya-Altay bölgesi ile İskit sahasında tespit edilen Eski Türklere ait kurganlar defnedilen kişinin cenazesinin yanı sıra çok çeşitli ve kıymetli eşyalara havidirler. Bu yapısı dolayısıyla en eski Türklerin sosyal ve kültürel hayatının tanınmasına olanak sağlamaktadırlar. Mumyalanmış cesetlere sahip kurganlar ise Eski Türklerin anatomisinin şifrelerini sunmaktadırlar. Türklerin mezar inşasında ve mumyalama sanatındaki becerileri ve kullandıkları teknik dolayısıyla cesetler gerçeğe en yakın formuyla günümüze ulaşmışlardır. Metfuna ait kıyafetler ve mezarda rastlanılan kumaşlar da dokusunu ve renklerdeki canlılığını yitirmemişlerdir. Bu sayede Türk mumyaları en meşhur Mısır mumyalarıyla rekabet etmektedirler.
