Abstract This study presents reflections on the movement of occupations of high schools in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) in order to characterize it as a semiotic object. The proposal is linked to the understanding of this mobilization as a cultural phenomenon and, as such, will be guided by the concepts of Semiotics of Culture. Thus, we conducted a field study, inspired by ethnographic observation and guided by categories in search of cultural traces in the occupation of the State School Padre Reus in Porto Alegre. We also tracked back among the field of documentary research some reports on dispersion collected on social networks and other sources, such as, press and nontraditional activists media spaces. In this conjunction, we highlight the potential of semiosis of occupations, implementing new processes and languages of resistance and inovation, while operating on the borders of the concept of horizontality and advancing effectively in the reconfiguration of new kinds of communication possibilities.
