Background: The operating room are anxious environments for patients due to complex structures. This anxiety can cause changes in feelings, thoughts and behavior in individuals. In the operating room, creating a positive environment that affects patients physically and mentally is important for ensuring patient safety. Objective: This research study was conducted to examine patients’ opinions about the operating room environment. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between 1st of March and 31st of May 2015 in the department of general surgery, a university hospital. 194 patients who underwent surgery in the department of surgery and agreed to participate were included in the research study. In the collection of the data, a questionnaire consisting of 35 questions which included information related to sociodemographic characteristics of the patients and operation period was used. The data collection was done using face to face interview method. Results: It was found out that the amount of time patients included in the research study wait in the operating room was short, that most of them see the operating room as healing environment and that they felt themselves safe in the operating room. It was determined that the patients received a high education in the period before the surgery but also it was determined that patients had inadequate information about the operating room. It was understood that it was the doctor who mostly acquainted the patients with it. Conclusion: As a result of this research, it was determined that the opinions of the patients about the operating room environment were generally positive and that the patients should be provided with the necessary information about operating room environment in preoperative education
