Social media has a central importance in democracy and participation discussions. The possibility of the new media to communicate with people they have never seen and unknown, by creating an area where individuals can express themselves in an unprecedented way, is considered an achievement in the name of ideal democracy practices. The conversion of individuals from the position of passive spectators of traditional media to active users with the possibilities provided by the new media has opened the door to a public negotiation ground. However, it has soon been revealed that participation and democracy can also be rejected by the user practices. This study focuses on the fact that values such as cultural diversity and the right to equal representation, which reveal the concept of political correctness, lose their effectiveness over time, becomes an ideological struggle tool and opens to discuss the influence of the concept of political correctness on social media on participating practices. Considering the user-oriented structure of social media, the impact of the concept on participation culture is assessed.
Social media plays a central role in the debate on democracy and participation. In the context of ideal democratic practices, the advent of online space -with the affordances of digital technologies- in which individuals can express themselves in a way that has never been possible before, and contact with people they have not encountered or met before, is considered an achievement. The transformation of individuals from traditional media's passive viewers into engaged new media users has opened a door to a public discussion area. However, it soon became evident that through participation, user practices could also take a turn for the worse. This study focuses on the fact that values which form the basis of the concept of political correctness such as "cultural diversity" and "equal representation" lose their efficacy over time and the concept itself becomes an instrument of ideological struggle. This research explores the deteriorating impact of political correctness on social media participatory practices. Taking into account the user-oriented nature of social media, the purpose of the article is to assess the effect of the concept of political correctness on participation culture.
