XIX. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından, XX. yüzyılın başlarında “Birinci Ulusal Türk Üslubu”nun ortaya çıkışına kadarki süreç içerisinde, Karaköy ve çevresinde de Batı mimarlık kültürünün izlerini yansıtan mimari örnekler inşa edilmiştir. Ekseriyetle bankalar ve iş hanlarının oluşturduğu bu sivil mimarlık örneklerinde, Batı üslubunun izleri ve yansımaları, Neobarok, Neoklasik, Neo-Gotik, Art Nouveau ve Eklektik üsluplar içerisinde verilmiştir. Bunlardan Art Nouveau üslubunun en önemli temsilcisi, Karaköy’deki Ziraat Bankası Hizmet Binasıdır.
