Platon’un siyasi görüşleri sıklıkla Devlet’te ortaya koyulan “filozof kral” önermesinin sınırları dahilinde yorumlanmakta ve buradan hareketle Platon, ütopik ve aynı zamanda totaliter bir yönetim taraftarı olarak suçlanmaktadır. Bu bakış açısı bir yandan Devlet’in asıl amacının birey ve toplumda adaletin tesis edilmesi ve siyasi etik temelde adil olmayan rejimlerin esaslı bir eleştirisinin yapılması olduğunu ihmal ederken, diğer yandan filozof kral önermesinin son dönem eserleri Devlet Adamı ve Yasalar’da revize edilmiş olmasını göz ardı etmektedir. Elbette Platon’un ahlak ve siyaset anlayışının sistematik bir bütünlükte olmayışı sözünü ettiğimiz hatalı yorumlara zemin hazırlamaktadır. Zira Platon’da henüz ne felsefenin teorik uğraşlarından bağımsız bir şekilde konumlandırılmış pratik bir saha ne de açık olarak sınırları birbirinden ayırt edilmiş etik-politik olgular alanı mevcuttur. Bu sebeple Platon’da ahlak ve siyaset ilişkisini araştırırken karşımıza çıkan en büyük güçlük, düşünürün yaşadığı dönemde bu iki sahanın nerdeyse tümüyle iç içe geçmiş olmasıdır. Öte yandan Platon’un pratik sahada (ahlaki ve siyasi olan arasında) bir ayrımı tercih etmeme ihtimalini de hesaba katmak zorundayız. İşte bu yazının öncellikli amacı Platon’un, başta adalet kavramında olmak üzere felsefi sisteminin temel kavram ve varsayımlarında ahlak ile siyaset arasında nasıl bir ilişki tesis ettiğini ortaya koymaktır.
Plato’s political thoughts are usually interpreted only within the boundaries of his statement “philosopher king” presented in Republic and thus he is accused of being an advocator of utopic and totalitarian government. This perspective, on the one hand, dismisses that the main purpose of Republic is the establishment of individual and social justice and criticizing the unjust political regimes on the political ethical basis. On the other hand, it ignores that the statement of philosopher king is revised in Plato’s later works Statesman and Laws. That Plato’s ethical and political views do not have a systematic totality forms a basis for these erroneous views. In Plato, there is neither a political area isolated from the theoretical pursuit of philosophy nor there is an area of ethical and political facts which are clearly distinguished from each other. Because of this reason, the hardest problem that we face while examining the relation between ethics and politics in Plato is that these fields are completely intermingled. On the other hand, we have to take in the account that Plato purposefully decide making no distinction in practical area (between ethics and politics). Thus, the primary aim of this article is to determine what kind of relation is Plato established between ethics and politics in the main concepts and presuppositions of his philosophical system, starting with the concept of justice.
