Sanayi Devrimi etkilerinin Safranbolu’ya ulaşmasından önce, önemli ticaret yolları üzerinde yer alan ve ticaretin önemli bir merkezi olan kent, aynı zamanda idari merkez olarak da bu dönemde dikkati çekmektedir. Geleneksel Safranbolu kenti konutları kent içerisindeki konumları, arsa sınırlamaları, geleneksel aile yaşantısı, sosyal ve ekonomik yapı, inanç ve gelenekler, yerel malzemeler, iklim ve coğrafyanın etkisi ile yüzyıllar içerisinde şekillenmiştir. Cumhuriyet döneminde, bugün il merkezi, o dönemde ise Safranbolu’nun bir köyü olan Karabük’te, 1937 yılında Demir Çelik Fabrikası’nın kurulmasıyla yapılan sanayi atılımları, dönemin mimarideki modern anlayışa bağlı uygulamaları da hızlı bir biçimde etkilenmiştir. Karabük’te, özellikle Yenişehir’de sosyal donatılarıyla planlanmış bir alanda inşa edilmiş konutların yanında, geleneksel Safranbolu dokusu içerisinde, o dönem gayrimüslimlerin yaşadığı Kıranköy mevkii ile yine o dönem yaz mevsiminde kullanılan Bağlar mevkiinde yapılan Cumhuriyet Dönemi konutları mevcuttur. Bu konutlar o dönem için yeni yapı malzemelerinin kullanıldığı, yeni yapım tekniklerinin uygulandığı ve yeni yaşam tarzının hayat bulduğu örnekler olarak ele alınabilir. Çalışma kapsamında Safranbolu’nun geleneksel dokusu içerisinde yer alan 12 adet Cumhuriyet dönemi konut yapısı tespit edilmiştir. Bunlar arasından rölöveleri alınarak plan ve iç mekân incelemelerinin yapılması mümkün olan beş adet konut yapısı seçilmiştir. Kıranköy mevkiinde bulunan, çok katlılığı ile dikkati çeken Gökay Apartmanı ile Bağlar mevkiinde, ele aldığımız dönem kapsamında tespit edilen yapılardan seçilen Ganioğlu Konağı, Kalafatoğlu Konağı, Dumlu Konağı ve Özkan Ailesine ait konut üzerine analiz çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Diğer yandan bu çalışmayı önemli kılan modernist akımın, Türk inkılaplarının ardından “Yeni Mimari” adıyla geleneksel Osmanlı kenti Safranbolu’ya ulaştığında, burada tekrar nasıl yorumlandığını ortaya koymasıdır.
Before the impacts of the Industrial Revolution reached Safranbolu, the city, which is located on important trade routes and is an important center of trade, is also considered as an administrative center in this period. Traditional Safranbolu city houses have been shaped over the centuries with its locations within the city, land limitations, traditional family life, social and economic structure, beliefs and traditions, local materials, climate and geography. During the Republic period, in Karabük, which is today the province center, and in that period a village of Safranbolu, the industrial breakthroughs made with the establishment of the Iron Steel Factory in 1937 and the modern understanding-related applications in the architecture of the period were also rapidly influenced. In Karabük, in particular in Yenişehir, in addition to the houses built in a planned area with their social equipment, in the traditional Safranbolu tissue, there are the Republican period houses made in the Bağlar position used in the summer of that period with the Kiranköy position in which the non-Muslims lived. These houses can be treated as examples of the new construction materials used for that period, the new construction techniques applied and the new lifestyle found life. In the framework of the study; 12 Republican housing structures located within the traditional fabric of Safranbolu have been identified. Five of them were selected by the plannings and internal examinations of the building. On the site of Kıranköy, the Gökay Apartment and the Bağlar Apartment, which is attracted to the multi-storey, the analysis of the housing of Ganioğlu Konağı, Kalafatoğlu Konağı, Dumlu Konağı and Özkan Family, selected from the structures identified in the framework of the period we deal with, has been done. On the other hand, what makes this work important is that the modernist stream reveals how it was reinterpreted here when the traditional Ottoman city of Safranbolu, after the Turkish invasions, arrived under the name of "New Architecture".
