Abstract:

Coastal areas have attracted the interest of people throughout history, and today, thanks to the geographical potential and characteristics of the coasts, have become areas where many human activities, including settlements, are focused. The beaches, which are the interaction area of the sea and the ground ecosystems, have always been the areas where changes have occurred due to human activities focused alongside their dynamic structure. Today, human-source changes on the coast occur with coastal filling activities. Coastal filling activities create new types of uses while bringing new areas to the use of coastal area. However, coastal filling areas have a significant impact on the coastal ecosystem due to changing the coastal structure and some risks create environmental problems. In Istanbul, in recent years, intense human pressure has led to changes on the coast and the main places where coastal filling activities are concentrated. In this study, the Maltepe Beach Park, the largest coastal filling activity of the Istanbul Anadolu side, has been evaluated in terms of coastal use. In the evaluation phase, geographical information systems (CBS), remote detection (UA) techniques, SWOT analysis, geographical impact assessment methods have been used. The assessment from a geographical point of view has shown that the Maltepe beach park has a wide green area, sports, recreation and social-cultural areas contributed to the Anadolu side of Istanbul. The fact that these areas provide people’s connection with the coast and the use of coastal environmental approaches are the other positive features of the park. However, the proximity of the Maltepe coastal park to the foil lines shows its liquidation and collapse potential and its negative characteristics in other environmental issues.
