Abstract:

The medications used for treatment in patients with intensive care, the constant opening of the mouth due to the endotrakeal tube, the failure to take fluids and nutrients through the mouth, the presence of the endotrakeal tube and the flasters used for detection, cause the deterioration of the integrity of the tissue around the mouth. This condition also causes the development of many oral problems such as periodontal diseases, mouth smell, mouth dryness, lips fractures and stomatitis. Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure and maintain adequate oral care in the prevention of oral problems and pneumonia associated with the ventilator (VIP) that may develop due to changes in the mucus of the patient’s mouth and oral care deficiency. In this collection, the importance of oral care in patients with intensive care, the points to be taken into consideration in the preservation of oral mucous health and the proof-based approaches in oral care practices have been reviewed.
