Abstract:

In this study, the two countries candidates to host the European Football Championship in 2024, one of the most prestigious international football organizations, the candidacy files of Turkey and Germany were examined and detailed in the country’s vision, stadiums, accommodation and training areas, transportation facilities, fans areas and other main titles within the UEFA assessment criteria. Although the candidacy of Turkey for the UEFA is generally positive, the international availability of Turkey is limited to the airline and several airports and transport infrastructure is generally insufficient; the lack of hotel capacity and social infrastructure in many candidate cities has weakened the candidacy of Turkey. Furthermore, the limitation of the organizational experience of the candidate cities of Turkey; the lack of an action plan in the field of human rights and the concern that current economic developments may risk the public investments planned for the 2024 European Football Championship can also be classified as the negative aspects of the candidacy of Turkey. Germany’s existing transport infrastructure, accommodation and training facilities are above expectations; the social infrastructure and organizational experience of the candidate cities are at the highest level and, most importantly, the fact that no new investments are planned for the European Football Championship. As a result, Germany was seen as a safer option for the UEFA and won the nomination. It can be said that the decision made after the vote is aimed at preserving the brand value of the European Football Championship and not risking sponsorship and advertising revenues.
