Abstract:

In the study, it is aimed to analyse 11th and 12th grade students’ skills related to graphic interpretation used in graphics understanding in the “factors which affect equilibriums” unit of chemistry lesson and associating graphics with other presentations. The study was carried out with 150 volunteering students who take chemistry classes in five high schools affiliated with the Ministry of Education in the cities of Ankara and Eskişehir. A measurement tool consisting of open-ended questions was used in the study. The questions used in the data collection tools aim to analyse the skills of interpreting graphs that consist of the factors which affect chemical equilibriums. The questions prepared to determine the skills of graphic interpretation aim to analyse the indicator of “interpretation of a drawn graphic” (graphics that are linear and non- linear). As a result of the implemented applications, it was determined that the students had difficulty in both identifying and interpreting the effects of the factors that affect the equilibrium in the drawn graphics given. They especially had difficulty in interpreting the graphs in which there is an impact of pressure/volume and temperature. It was determined that they focused on only one variance and made mistakes in interpreting the graphs when there is the second or the third effect, that their lack of knowledge influenced their skills in interpretation, and that they ignored whether the substances related to equilibriums were solid or liquid in the graphics.
