Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess a group of dental students' postgraduate career plans, specialization choices and the factors that motivate these choices. Tools and Methods: This survey study included 226 dental students who studied in classes 3, 4 and 5. In the study, three different types of response have been used, already selectively, open-end and liquid-type scale (1=uneffective, 2=low-effective, 3=mediate, 4=effective, 5=very-effective). In the first part of the survey, an assessment of the socio-economic situation, such as age, gender, income level of the family and educational conditions, was made. In the second part, the reasons for choosing a dental profession and the factors that may be effective were questioned, and in the last part, the questions were addressed on the postgraduate career plan in dental medicine. Identifying statistics are applied to the data, the average and standard deviation values are calculated. The percentage of students who do not consider specialization throughout their work life is 5.9%. In the departments that students want to specialize, oral, dental and dentist surgery is ranked first (3.3%), orthodontics (15.2%) is ranked second and oral, dental and dentist radiology is ranked second (2.4%). The result: the motivation of the expertise in this work group is very high. Among the participants was the selection of oral, dental and neck surgical specialties. It appears that the motivation of specialization is focused on financial concerns and professional interests. For the verification of these findings and better understanding of the effective parameters in this regard, we need extensive research involving different university students across our country.
