Idioms are important words that reveal the richness of meaning, connotation and imagination of the language they belong to because of their metaphorical meanings. Due to its contribution to the formation of some rhetoric and meaning stratum in poetry, it has also been frequently used in classical literature. Concept, phrase, term etc. used in poetry it doesn’t seem possible to say that each of the words is also included in the dictionaries. It is determined by the examinations that some idioms used in classical literature texts haven’t reached the present day. Sometimes, it is seen that an idiom that is frequently used today has different meanings and connotations in classical literature. The idioms to “parmak basmak” and “harfine parmak basmak” should be assessed within this framework. In this study, firstly, the current meanings of idioms were emphasized and the meanings given to idioms in printed and electronic dictionaries were gathered. Afterwards, the idioms were questioned in terms of origin and for this purpose, some Arabic-Persian dictionaries were reviewed. Whether the idioms existed in the historical periods of Turkish was also determined by the literature review. Finally, the meaning stratum of idioms in classical literature have been revealed on the examples obtained from poetry journal, collection of biographies and divans.
