Finishing and retention are two successive phases of orthodontic treatment. The provision of optimal finishing criteria and a good assessment of the treated dentition and the environmental factors affecting it are critical to determine the appropriate retention procedure. The use of fixed language retainers in the retention phase is now frequently preferred. There are usually two types of wires required at fixed retention. The thick wire is used for a mandibular canine-canine retainer bonded only to the canines, whereas the thin multistranded wire is used for retainers in which all teeth in a segment are bonded. In addition to lingual fixed retainers, the use of short labial fixed retainers for certain specific conditions can also improve long-term results. The use of fixed retainers is also a good choice for the protection of bridge prothesis or implant space. Long-term experience with fixed retainers is satisfactory. The duration of these appliances in the mouth is often a matter of concern for patients. If the applied retainer wire is stable, the treatment results areined and the patient is performing hygiene procedures, there is no valid reason to remove the fixed retainer wire.
