Abstract:

In this study, the statistical evaluation of the female students, who enrolled between 1933-1972 in Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary and Higher Institute of Agriculture the tasks of the female academicians in faculty were examined. In this study compared with the general situation in Turkey in the same period. "National Education Movements 1927-1966, 1942-1972" reports issued by the State Institute of Statistics and Muzaffer Bekman's book, named "Veterinary History", were examined as the main sources of the study. There were some differences in the lists of graduates, between in the some part of M. Bekman’s book and "National Education Movements" reports. In this regard, the State Institute of Statistics report was taken as the basic document of the study. The first veterinary education in the Ottoman Empire began with the opening of "Military Veterinary School" in Istanbul in 1842. In 1889, the first civilian school of veterinary was began to the training and the education. These two schools were combined under the name of "Higher Veterinary School" in 1920 in Istanbul and the veterinary education continued there. In 1933, to get her with the university reform in Turkey, was established in Ankara and the veterinary school located in Istanbul was moved to Ankara as "Faculty of Veterinary" After the establishment of the University of Ankara in 1948, the faculty of veterinary was integrated into this university. Initially, as in many other professions, the veterinary medicine were made by men. Over a long period, the female students were not interested in veterinary school. Last 93 years in the history of the faculty, Merver Ansel was the first female student who has gotten a degree in veterinary medicinein 1935. Between the years of 1933-1972; totally 15. 347 students were enrolled to Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (AÜVF) and Higher Institute of Agriculture. They were 6.66 % female students and, 93.34 % the male students. At the same period, in Turkey, the number of students in colleges and faculties were 1 920 366 students and 19.20 % of them were female. Veterinarians, from the begining of the training with the science methods, served on live stock in rural area in a certain period. Therefore, these professions were preferred by men. With the development of the country and the differentiation of the needs of people, the veterinary medicine has gained importance in the city. In the statement, the female student statistics are compared in the period that Turkey had a just one veterinary school and also, the tasks of the female academicians in the faculty were evaluated between 1933-1972.
