Abstract:

In this study, students of 4th grade have studied the levels of understanding and conceptual errors of the basic concepts included in the social information course. The work carried out in the good period of the 2022-2023 educational year, was carried out with students studying in the primary schools in the province of Malta. The group of participants determined by the measurement sample method consists of 40 (22 girls, 18 men) 4th class students. The research is methodically designed in the scanning model. The semi-structured questions consisting of 16 short-response and open-end questions include identity, right, citizenship, chronology, national sovereignty, national struggle, museum, culture, empathy, respect, responsibility, map, crocodile, human geography, natural disasters and geographical characteristics. In the analysis of the research data, the visual analysis technique was used. According to the findings obtained, the conclusion was that the vast majority of 4th grade students responded to the relevant concepts and at a limited level of understanding, and that the expressions were created by moving more from the daily life and the examples learned in the class. Students have created conceptual errors around the most human geography and geographical characteristics such as abstract and less suitable for sample.
