Abstract:

Cyprus has been an important area in political, social, military and commercial terms throughout the historical process. Cyprus Island, which came under the sovereignty of Great Britain after the domination of the Ottoman Empire, later turned into a political and social crisis area after the attacks against the Turkish Cypriots by Enosis supporters who were aiming to unite with Greece. Turkey, Greece and Britain's political reconciliation on the island began a new era today still under the guarantee has not been provided. The series of problems that started with the acceptance of the Greek Cypriot Administration as the sole representative of the island to the EU membership, is further complicated by the policies of the Greek Cypriot Administration of determining the unilateral Exclusive Economic Zone areas in the Eastern Mediterranean and realizing the agreements on maritime jurisdictions with the regional countries. This study focuses on the policies of the GCASC, with the support of Europe, that ignore the TRNC and contradict the international agreements and decisions, especially in Zurich and London. Following the development of the Cyprus Problem in the historical process, the steps taken in the field of energy around the island are addressed within the framework of geopolitical and geostrategic developments. Through this approach, the new steps that the TRNC can take in the context of international law have been tried to be evaluated, and the possible opportunities to be recognized as an international actor through the hydrocarbon developments after 2003 have been put forward as policy recommendations.
