Hz. İbrahim oğlu Hz. İsmail ile beraber yeniden inşa ettiği Kâbe, Mekke’de mukim bulunan kabilelere bazı ayrıcalıklar getirmiştir. Hz. Muhammed’in beşinci kuşaktan dedesi Kusay b. Kilâb’ın dağınık halde yaşayan bütün Kureyşlileri Mekke’ye toplaması ve kutsal mabed Kâbe’nin kendilerine sağladığı sosyal/ekonomik getiri, kendilerini Arabistan yarımadasında daha da imtiyazlı bir konuma getirmiştir. Kusay b. Kilâb’ın vefatından sonra kendi zamanında oluşturduğu kamu görevleri oğulları/torunları arasında rekabete dönüşmüş ve Kureyş, Mutayyebûn-Ahlâf olarak iki büyük pakta ayrışmıştır. Asabiyetin öncelendiği Mekke toplumunda Hz. Muhammed’in elçilikle görevlendirildikten sonra tebliğ ettiği yeni dine muhalefette bu paktlaşmadan kaynaklanan zihinsel izdüşümler belirleyici olmuştur. Hz. Muhammed’e en çetin muhalefet eden kırk kadar kişi ya Ahlâf grubundan ya da Mutayyebûn grubundan olup konjonktürel olarak daha sonra onlarla beraber hareket edenlerdir. Tarihi süreçte bu kamplaşmanın tarafı olmayan kabilelerin muhalefetleri Ahlâf grubuna mensup kabilelerin muhalefeti gibi aşırılıklar içermemiş, daveti reddetseler bile daha stabil şekilde cereyan etmiştir. Asabiyetin zirvede olduğu Mekke toplumunda bu sosyolojik gerçeğin anlaşılması ilk dönem tebliğ faaliyetlerinin seyri hakkında bilgi verebilir. İlk dönem tefsir ve siyer kitapları merkezli bu çalışmada ayet/sure inzaline sebep olan müşrikler ve davete karşı çıkış sebeplerinin tarihi arka planı üzerinde durulmaya çalışılmıştır.
