Introduction and objective: Rugby is an intermittent and high-intensity team sport. It is known that the performance of athletes is directly linked to an adequate intake of nutrients, and inadequacies in the diet can impact their performance and recovery. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate food consumption, nutritional knowledge and body composition of athletes from a youth rugby team in Pelotas, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study, with young athletes from the Vem Ser Rugby Project, from the Federal University of Pelotas. Due to a previously established institutional bond, 13 schoolchildren aged between 16 and 18 were intentionally involved. A 24-hour food recall and the NUKYA questionnaire were applied, as well as anthropometric measurements of weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference and a protocol of 3 skinfolds (triceps, suprailiac and thigh). Results: Food consumption was inadequate for most nutrients, nutritional knowledge was insufficient, but body composition was adequate. Conclusion: Due to inadequate energy consumption and low nutritional knowledge, it is essential that the team receive nutritional monitoring, aiming to improve nutritional aspects, the health of athletes and maintenance of body composition.
