Abstract:

Purpose: Emerging economies are countries with high growth figures. They realize these figures with the energy they import. Therefore, since energy efficiency is extremely important for these countries, the effect of energy resources used in energy supply on energy efficiency has been investigated. Methodology: In this study, the supply-side factors affecting energy efficiency for 23 emerging economies in the 1990-2018 period were investigated using the Driscoll and Kraay Resistive Estimator. Findings: While hydro is one of the renewable energy sources that affect energy efficiency the most positive, wind, solar, etc. have been found to have the least positive effects. When analyzed as coefficients, 1% increase in hydro resource increases energy efficiency by 0.18%, while a 1% increase in wind, solar, etc. increases energy efficiency by 0.01%. Therefore, the use of renewable energy offers very important opportunities for energy efficiency in these economies. Originality: Despite today's technologies, the efficiency/productivity experienced in oil, coal, gas, biomass, nuclear, renewable energy inputs has a very low rate of around 11%. There are no studies investigating the effects of energy sources and energy losses on energy efficiency in the literature. Therefore, the difference of this study from other studies is that the effect of energy losses on energy efficiency together with energy sources is investigated.
