Dîvânu Lugâti’t-Türk’ün ilginç bir bulunuş hikâyesi vardır. Kilisli Rıfat’ın naklettiği bu hikâye, Türkoloji camiasında genel kabul görmüş ve yaygınlaşmıştır. Hikâyeye göre, Ali Emiri Efendi, sahaflar çarşısında Burhan Efendi’nin dükkânında kitabı tesadüf eseri görmüş ve eserin kıymetini hemen anlayarak onu satın almıştır. Ancak Ali Emiri Efendi’nin Tarih ve Edebiyat dergisinde kendi kaleminden çıkan “Millet Kütüphanesi Ne Surette Teşekkül Etti?” başlıklı yazısında kitabın bulunuşuna ilişkin farklı bilgiler yer almaktadır. Bu makalede ağırlıklı olarak Dîvân’ın bulunuşuna ilişkin Ali Emiri Efendi’nin az bilinen yazısı değerlendirilmiştir. Ayrıca eserin bulunuşundan ilk yayınına kadar olan süreç ile ilgili bir tarihlendirme denemesi de yapılmıştır.
