Abstract:

According to the Scientific Research and Publishing Ethics Guidelines published by the Council of Higher Education in 2012 and updated in 2016, ethics committees have been established in universities in order to conduct human interactive research according to the research ethics, including graduate theses. The Social Sciences Ethics Board is one of them. But getting ethical approval for social science research designs is a new situation for our country. Moreover, the majority of the ethical codes contained in the Guidelines that lead to the work of these committees are not related to research ethics, but to publication ethics. Therefore, it is unknown how and what social sciences ethical councils perform the duty of ethical approval to research designs that come before them. No research has been found on this. This example of incident research, which has been used as a source of data of the ethical examination results on applications in one of the oldest universities in Turkey for two years, keeps the uncertainty light in its own scope. The findings of the study show that the forms of application should be simplified and customized to the field, that the membership of the ethical board causes a serious increase in the work burden for the teachers; that the request for ethical correction of approximately 2/3 of applications has contributed significantly to this work burden; that the reasons for the correction are caused by the lack of sensitivity of the "methodical errors may lead to error" in the preparation of the application documents.
