İspanyol edebiyat tarihinde 98 Kuşağı olarak bilinen yazar ve şairler topluluğunun ve İspanya'da varoluşçuluğun önde gelen temsilcilerinden biri olan Miguel de Unamuno, 1921 yılında yayımlanan romanı Tula Teyze’de (La tía Tula), ölümsüzlük endişesini annelik ideali aracılığıyla işler. Uzun öykü veya kısa roman olarak tanımlanabilecek olan Tula Teyze, önce kız kardeşinin öksüz kalan çocuklarına ve daha sonra da eniştesinin evlendiği bir diğer kadından olan çocuklara annelik yapan bir teyzenin öyküsünü anlatır. Annelik ve kadınlık sorunlarının ele alındığı eserin başkahramanı Tula, zamanının sosyal geleneklerine meydan okuyan, güçlü ve bağımsız bir figür olarak tasvir edilir. Gerçekte anne olmadığı halde, hayatını kendine has bir annelik idealine adamış bekâr bir kadını merkeze alması nedeniyle eseri arketipçi eleştiri kuramı çervesinde inceledim. Northtrop Frye’ın, Carl Gustav Jung’un ortaya atmış olduğu arketip kavramından yola çıkarak sistemleştirip geliştirdiği arketipçi eleştiri kuramı, edebi bir metindeki evrensel temaları ve altta yatan anlamları keşfetmeyi amaçlayarak eserde tekrar eden kalıpları ve sembolleri ortaya çıkarmaya ve analiz etmeye çalışır. Bu çalışmada romanın başkahramanı Tula’nın anne arketipiyle ilişkilendirilip ilişkilendirilemeyeceği, eğer öyleyse Tula’nın anne arketipinin hangi özelliklerini sergilediği incelenmiştir.
The pioneer of existentialist philosophy in Spain and one of the most important members of the group of writers and poets known as the Generation of 98 in the history of Spanish literature, Miguel de Unamuno deals with the concern for immortality through the ideal of motherhood in his novel Aunt Tula (La tía Tula) published in 1921. Aunt Tula can be categorised as a long story or a short novel and tells the story of an aunt who becomes a mother first to her sister’s orphaned children and then to the children of another woman whom her brother-in-law married. Tula, the protagonist of the work, deals with the problems of motherhood and womanhood and is portrayed as a strong and independent figure who challenges the social traditions of her time. I analysed the novel within the framework of the archetypal theory of criticism since it centres on a single woman who devotes her life to a unique ideal of motherhood, although she is not really a mother. Northtrop Frye has systematised and developed the theory of archetypal criticism basing on the concept of archetype of Carl Gustav Jung. This theory aims to discover universal themes and underlying meanings in a literary text and tries to reveal and analyse recurring patterns and symbols in the work. In this study, it is examined whether Tula, the protagonist of the novel, can be associated with the mother archetype, and if so, which characteristics of the mother archetype Tula exhibits.
