Abstract:

Purpose: In the framework of evidence-based applications, information on intramuscular injection application may be updated. This study was conducted in order to identify the information on the application of intramuscular injections of nurses working in the children’s hospital. Method and method: This study, which is of a characteristic type, was carried out in a child hospital between 01 May 2019-01 June 2019. The study was completed with 144 nurses who were working in this hospital and who agreed to participate in the research. The data was collected by face-to-face discussion through the survey form. The data was evaluated using the IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 package program. The ethical board permission and other necessary permissions for the work have been obtained. The average age of nurses at the study is 32.25±7.92 years and 60.4 percent of them have a bachelor’s level of education. 63.9% of participants received training on the application of intramuscular injection. In the intra-muscular injection application, 90.3 percent of nurses said that the body mass index is important in the area selection, while 89.6 percent said they prefer vastus lateralis muscles in babies and children. In order to reduce pain, 39.6 percent of nurses said they don’t need aspiration, and 76.4 percent said they were effective methods such as breastfeeding and contact with the skin during the injection. The result: In our study, the majority of nurses have determined that they prefer vastus lateralis muscle in the application, before the application they pay attention to the child’s weight, age, body mass index, the volume of the drug, the muscle mass and the length of the injection.
