Comparative Analysis of Determinants of Infant Mortality across Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract:

Newborn and maternal health are reflections of any good economy. The Infant Mortality (IM) is caused by the many socioeconomic and environmental factors, so this study is first attempt to measure determinants of IM for the most affected country like Pakistan. On the basis of different income group across Punjab, data is extracted through primary household survey using Multi-stage technique for one year from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2018. Binay Logistic regression is used for this purpose whereas district DG Khan, where Primary education of household head negatively affect infant mortality rate, Public Hospital shows positive relation with infant mortality. While Income shows negative impact on infant mortality. Hospital Distance shows positive impact on IM because Dg Khan District is consist of hard areas along with vast desert (Walia et al. (2020). For Chakwal, Education for Households showed a negative and significant impact on infant mortality. Government hospital shows positive role on IM. Household’s income shows negative impact on IM (Brunello et al. (2011). Hospital Distance shows positive insignificant impact on IM. Water source has positive and insignificant impact (Koenig et al. (2007). Water Source hand pump has positive impact on IM. Whereas Antenatal care has negative and significant impact on IM. HHhyg(1) Households hygienic conditions has positive and significant impact. Females with Tetanus Toxoid has have less chances of having IM. For Sialkot district education shows positive impact on IM. Hospital type show negative impact on IM, household’s income show positive impact in IM. While hospital distance, hygienic conditions, Tetanus Toxoids and Anti-natal care show positive impact in IM.
