Arab-Christian intellectuals have a significant place in the intellectual life of the Ottoman Empire. Arab language has emerged as the center of the Arabic thought, which evolved into Arab nationalism in the early 20th Century. Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, being a Lebanese/Moranite intellectual, was one of the pioneers of Arab modernism, and was well-known for his studies on Arabic literature and linguistics. Shidyaq underlined the significance of Muslim/Christian co-existence in the Ottoman lands in his autobiographical travel book “al-Saq'ala Saq fi ma Huwa'l-Faryaq/Leg over Leg or Turtle in the Tree”. His autobiography was based upon his observations from his travels, from Ottoman lands to Europe and Britain. When his life story and his studies were considered, Shidyaq was an Arab intellectual. On the other hand, he was a modernist Ottoman intellectual when he was considered in a broader context. In our study, this specific framework is emphasized, based on the examples from the author’s autobiography Saq ala Saq.
