Abstract:

The Abbasids opposed the policy of violence and discrimination implemented by the Umayyads against the Ahl al-Bayt and the Mawalis and launched a revolutionary movement to restore their rights. They successfully concluded this movement, which they initiated with the motto of revitalizing the Quran and the Sunnah, and established a dynastic state that would rule for approximately five hundred years. Although the Abbasids achieved success with a discourse such as defending the rights of Ahl al-Bayt and bringing them to power, they abandoned this discourse and adopted a different policy from the moment they came to power. From Ebü'l Abbâs es-Seffâh, the first Abbasid caliph, to the period of Mutawakkil, different political attitudes were taken conjuncturally in relations with the Ahl al-Bayt. These policies, which stood out in different ways until the tenth caliph Mutawakkil, developed against the Ahl al-Bayt as of the Mutawakkil period. Mutawakkil implemented policies that contradicted his predecessors, not only in his attitude towards the Alioğulları, but also in political issues concerning the recent history of the Abbasids. Considering the socio-cultural and political environment in which Mutawakkil grew up, the basic justifications of the policies that will cause the reaction of the Muslim people against the Ahl al-Bayt constitute the basis of our research topic. The present study aims to focus on how these policies are perceived in the Muslim society and the nature of the reactions that develop.
