Abstract Translation into Brazilian Portuguese of the article “Why and How to Write Translation Histories?”, written by Lieven D’Hulst and originally published in english in the special edition of Crop (v. 6, São Paulo, 2001) focused on translation history in Brazil. By taking the mnemonic hexameter used by classical rhetoric to address oratory - who (quis); what (quid); where (ubi); by which means (quibus auxiliis), why (cur); how (quomodo); when (quando) - and applying it specifically to the context of translation history and historiography, D’Hulst shows what can/should be covered by this area of translation studies. We would like to note that the translation of this article also involved an editing effort. As the opening text of the special edition just cited, the author mentions several other articles which are part of the same edition as examples of researches conducted; we chose to transfer these mentions to the footnotes with the objective to give the text a better flow within a new publication context.
