In this article, Turkish personal names in the Payas district in the second half of the 19th century, those included in the census conducted by the official organization called Fırka-i Islahiye in 1867 based on the population registers of the period, are discussed. An analytical examination has been conducted on the 2409 male names in these registers. In the middle of the 19th century, in the district of Payas, names of Arabic origin were used most often. Most of these are Islamic names of Arabic origin such as Mehmed, Ali, Mustafa, and it has been found that most of them are the names of the Prophet and people of his household. These names were borrowed from the names of the Prophet, caliphs and other major Islamic personalities. When Turkish and Persian names were given, however, names in such name groups as those reflecting ancient Turkish religious beliefs and traditions, administrative-military titles and terms, names denoting good wishes, names of historical personalities, names of heavenly objects, geographical names or professional, animal and mineral names were commonly used.
