Doğamızın bir gerekliliği olan ölüm, bütün canlı varlıklar için kaçınılmaz olan sonun ifadesidir. Bilindiği kadarıyla tüm varlıklar içinde sadece insanın düşünen, anlam yükleyen bilinçli bir varlıktır ve ölümü bir son, bir yokluk olarak algılanmakta nitelendirmektedir. Ölümü tecrübe yoluyla bilen insan için ölüm her zaman korkulması, kaçınılması gereken bir durum olarak görülmüştür. Ölüme bakış açısı genel olarak aynı yönde olmasına rağmen ölümü kabulleniş ve ölüme yaklaşım şekli, içinde yaşanılan koşullara göre değişiklik göstermektedir. Bu açıdan toplumdan topluma ve kültürden kültüre ölüm olmasının bazı bakımlardan değiştiği de bir gerçektir. Geleneksel dönemde hayatın normal bir süreci olarak görülen ölüm olgusu, ölüm öncesi ölüme hazırlık evresi ve ölüm sonrası ölü gömme ritüellerini içerir. Modern döneme gelindiğinde ise tıp biliminde meydana gelen gelişmeler ve modern hayatın insanı her yönüyle kuşatması ölüm algısını değiştirmiştir. Artık hayatın büyük bir bölümünde görmezden gelinen bir olguya dönüşmüş olan ölüm sadece yaşlılık veya hastalık durumlarında hatırlanır olmuştur. Modern insan çoğu zaman hiç ölmeyecekmiş gibi yaşayarak, sevdikleri insanları bile tek başına ölüme terk eder hale gelmiştir.
Death, a necessity of our nature, is the expression of the end that is inevitable for all living beings. As far as it is known, in all beings, only man is a thoughtful, meaningful conscious being, and death is perceived as an end, an absence. For a person who knows death through experience, death has always been seen as a fear, a situation to be avoided. Although the point of view of death is generally in the same direction, the acceptance of death and the approach to death varies according to the conditions in which it is experienced. It is also a fact that from society to society and from culture to culture the death has changed in some ways. The phenomenon of death, seen as a normal process of life in the traditional period, includes the stage of preparation for death before death and the after-death funeral rituals. When it comes to the modern era, the developments in the medical science and the surrounding of modern life of man in all aspects have changed the perception of death. Death, which has now become an unforgettable phenomenon in a large part of life, has only been remembered in the age of age or in cases of illness. The modern man has often lived as if he would never die, leaving even the loved ones alone to death.
