Abstract:

Objective: This study examines the attitudes of midwifery students towards gender and other factors associated with these attitude. Materials and Methods: The population of this descriptive study consisted of midwifery students studying at a state university. A total number of 165 volunteer students were included in the sample between November and December 2020. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Gender Roles Attitude Scale were used as data collection tools. Results: The mean age of the students was 21.16±1.32 years, and the mean Gender Roles Attitude Scale score was 98.03±14.71. The analysis shows that the average of the female gender role subscale scores (p=0.008) and the average of the total scale scores (p=0.048) of the fourth-grade students were higher than other grades. It also indicates that the students who graduated from other high schools have a more egalitarian gender role compared to the graduates of the classical high school program. Conclusion: This study shows that the midwifery students generally have traditional attitudes in terms of gender roles. As the grade level increases, the egalitarian attitude towards gender roles also increases.
