OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out as a descriptive study in order to examine the use of complementary and alternative treatment in the patients with hypertension. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted with 347 patients. The data was collected by using questionnaire consisting of the information about the patient’s demographic characteristics and using state of complementary and alternative treatment. Data that was collected from the study was analyzed by using means, percentage and chi-squared test. RESULTS: The result of the study has shown that 52.7% of the patients use complementary and alternative treatment, marital status and income with use of complementary and alternative treatment were found not to be statistically significant (p>0.05), age, gender, family type, in addition to hypertension availability chronic disease, residing and education with use of complementary and alternative treatment were found not to be statistically significant (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The patients having hypertension use complementary and alternative treatment. Nurses should determine the use of complementary and alternative treatment for individuals with chronic disease. It is suggested that patients with chronic disease should compose training and counseling programmes related to the safe use of complementary and alternative treatment and nurse medical history forms should include the usage questions about complementary and alternative treatment .
