KADI BURHANEDDİN’İN DAMADI MEZİD BEY
2017

Abstract:

Kadı Burhaneddin who fled to Diyarbekir due to the pressure from Yildirim Beyazid, was killed by Kara Yülük Osman Bey: therefore, Sivas was added to Ottoman territories just as the other sovereign territories of the Anatolian principalities. However, Anatolian seigneurs and successors attempted to re-gain their territories from Ottoman right after the victory of Timur in Çubukova. There are rumors, discussions and even scenarios about Mezid Bey who attempted the similar case in Sivas. The first of these rumors is that Hüseyin Hüsameddin who wrote The History of Amasya, stated that Mezid Bey is Kurdish. This article presents that the historical records which were arisen for the first time in the foundation of Hisariye Madrasah, prove that those rumors are not correct. Secondly, if there is no mistake, there is another Mezid Bey referred as mirahor of Murad the Second in the Ottoman history scene. However, Johann Wilhelm Zinkeisen (died in 1863) claims in his book called The History of Ottoman Empire that this Mezid Bey is the one who challenged Çelebi Mehmet in Sivas right after Kadı Burhaneddin and, he describes him as “one of the best commanders of Çelebi Mehmet in Europe”. This Mezid Bey got martyred during capturing Hirmanştad together with his son, according to another story together with his two sons. He was attacked by Hungarians in 30 Zilkade month (18 March 1442) and according to another story in 846 Hijri month (March 1442) during his invasion near Transylvania. However, the records on the death of Mezid Bey and the dates of these journeys do not correspond to the journey chronology of Ottoman. In the circumstances, it is possible that Mezid Bey who certainly died in 836 Ramadan month (April 1433) according to the grave stone written in Tokat, is the same person with Mezid Bey who got martyred in the battlefield: according to his testimony in the battlefield, his body was moved to Tokat.
