Abstract:

The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity of Demirjian and Willems methods in the detection of the tooth age in a group of children in the Eastern Black Sea Region. Method and Requirements: In the study, the panoramic radiography of 600 children between the ages of 5 and 14 was evaluated as retrospective. Dental development was evaluated according to the stages recommended by Demirjian and Willems. The correspondence between chronological and dental age has been analyzed by a statistically matched t-test. Statements: When compared chronological age and tooth age in both Demirjian and Willems methods, statistically significant differences were found in some age groups in girls and boys (p<0,05). The Demirjian method is compatible with both girls and boys in the age groups of 8, 9, 10 and only boys in the age groups of 11, while high forecast values in other age groups. The Willems method was found compatible with chronological age in the 5 year group only for girls, while in the 7 and 12 year group only for boys, while in all other age groups. For a group of children in the Eastern Black Sea Region, the Demirjian method was found to have higher forecast values than the chronological age, while the Willems method was found to have more compatible forecast values.
