Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, the most important name in the generation of the Fünûn community, has an uncertain place in the settlement of the novel genre in our literature. The May and Black novel deals with the process of self-realization in which the person's worries and hopes, dreams and truth, desires and needs conflict with each other and ultimately result in disappointment. In this process where the other person cannot balance between dreams and realities, the main problem is that it is in the error. The other person in the novel, Ahmet Cemil, is in a position of a character that moves more than his needs, according to his desires. The goal of Ahmet Cemil, a talented, failed, romantic and dreaming character, is to get rid of the feelings of lack and insufficiency in the subconscious. He needs tools such as money, fame, love and art in the process of individualization. The economic comfort that money will bring, the future emotional life through fame and love that will be formed through literature, is a symbolic source of power for him. While literature and love are the original tools in the process of self-realization of Ahmet Cemil, fatherlessness and moneylessness are the greatest obstacles in this process. Literature and love are a kind of gateway to immortality for him. Money is a means that will change your life, enable you to fulfill your wishes and regain the lost father’s authority. The purpose of the study in May and Black is to solve the meaning that the other person sees as an instrument in the process of self-realization and the art and love carries on and to determine the effect of paternity and moneylessness that leads to failure. The study has been approached from a psychoanalytic perspective.
