Abstract:

To make sure you understand what you read depends on the development of many skills. However, research shows that students have difficulty acquiring some understanding skills. In this case, it is necessary to determine how these skills develop in students over time. The purpose of this research is to detail how the students understand how they are developing during the period from fourth to sixth class. For this purpose, students have studied how the skills of answering text and non-text questions, determining main ideas, summarizing and asking questions develop within two years. The research methods are used by research methods. The sample of the study consists of 26 students continuing to the sixth class in the 2016-2017 educational year, which is in the fourth class in the 2014-2015 educational year, which continues to a transferred first-second school connected to the Alaçam district of Samsun. The method of sampling was used for the purpose of determining the research group. The study found that during the period between the fourth and the sixth classes, students gave detailed answers to the question of understanding of both texts, especially the text at the fourth level. But it is clear that students have difficulties in answering both non-text questions and creating non-text questions. Students remain inadequate in determining and summarizing the main ideas both in the fourth and sixth classes. Although the emphasis that students have made on the whole text increases over the course of two years, this situation was not enough to determine the main idea and to summarize it.
