Abstract The recent and significant contribution of studies on the origins of Islam and the Quran, signed by European and American scholars, has brought to the field of Quranic studies the need to reassess understanding of the signic materiality of the Quranic text, based on adopted editing and interpretation methods of Bible studies. This essay takes up the outline of some of these studies by underlining their implications for the redefinition of the original text and the need for retranslation to include such assumptions.
