Abstract:

Traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death, and therefore 1.3 million people worldwide lose their lives each year. Though all regions in the world are affected by these accidents, low and medium-income countries share an unproportionate burden. Current estimates show that 2% of deaths in Turkey are due to traffic accidents. Despite the importance of this growing epidemic, the data related to traffic accidents is limited. In this article, an analysis of the existing data sets, the data that can be accessed through the review of scientifically published studies and the cost of traffic accidents are calculated and an overview of the epidemicology in Turkey has been presented. Data related to traffic accidents; provided by the Ministry of Health, Social Security Institution, TUIK, Turkish Insurance Association, Municipalities, Security General Directorate, the financial cost of a five-year period and the size of this cost within the GDP has been attracted. In addition to the material damage account, the internationally recognized calculation methods have been referred to preventive measures for the reduction of accidents by making the mental damage / indirect cost, the quality of life loss account. The high loss identified by calculation is the quality that will provide motivation for measures to be taken in this sense.
