Abstract:

Modern state provides public security not just by security forces based on law but by norms and normalizing people. Nowadays, security policies have begun to occupy political agendas of states. Therefore, security and freedom balance are problematized by states again. In this research the concepts of Michel Foucault, who is a major philosopher to analyses power relations, as modern power and disciplinary control is going to be discussed with Pierre Bourdieu, who conceptualize symbolic violence, in the context of providing rationality and legitimacy to power. According to these two theorists who maintain the phenomenon of security in a different manner, the difference between the modern period and the previous period is; states instead of holding a monopoly of physical violence, such as police and soldiers; design reasonable, normal and disciplined citizens in accordance with established rules and standards. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to discuss the relations of domination, which are hidden under the name of secure community, by Foucault and Bourdieu theses. In this context, a reading of domination by two theorists is carried out by highlighting the common and separate points, which they bring new extensions to the phenomenon of supervision and monitoring. In this sense; in the first instance, Foucault's concepts of bio-power and disciplinary power are used. Subsequently, Bourdieu's theoretical framework such as “symbolic power and symbolic violence”, habitus, field, capital, doxa, symbolic order, is treated to make new conclusions about security.
