Abstract:

In recent years, a new street system has emerged in European and American cities in addition to the grid-planned streets. Known as "cul-de-sac," this new order is planned as dead-end streets with only one way out, designed to protect individuals from the noise and turmoil of the city. Cul-de-sacs are becoming increasingly important in western cities, as they create a safe and private space. The purpose of these streets is similar to the dead-end streets seen in ancient Islamic cities. This situation has been described as the rediscovery of dead-end streets. The cul-de-sacs that emerged in modern western cities were compared with the dead-end streets in traditional Islamic cities. The publications on the dead-end streets that were written about Islamic cities and modern western city plans were examined, and the differences and similarities between the two were tried to be determined based on these publications. As a result of the study, it has been understood that while privacy is a priority in the formation of dead-end streets in Islamic cities, security concerns are more effective in the construction of dead-end streets in western cities.
