Masonluk, Türkiye topraklarına XVIII. yüzyılda girmiş ve hayli etkili olmuş ezoterik mahiyeti olan içe kapalı bir teşkilatlanmadır. Bununla birlikte masonluk, localarda yapılan konuşmalar ve masonik yayınlarda ele alınan konularla entelektüel faaliyete ve bilginin işlenmesine önem veren bir yapı olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Türkiye masonları da Cumhuriyet devri başlangıcından itibaren, bu perspektife uygun düşecek biçimde, yalnız üyelerine yönelik kapalı devre dergiler çıkarmış ve bu dergilerde başta ezoterizm olmak üzere siyasetten ilahiyata, bilimden tarihe kadar pek çok farklı disiplinde çalışmalar yapmışlardır. Cumhuriyet kurulduktan sonra çıkarılan ilk masonik dergi, Büyük Şark dergisidir. Bu derginin, 1935 yılında nihayete ermesi ile Türkiye masonluğunun uykuya yatmasına paralel biçimde masonik yayınlar da uzun bir süre çıkartılamamıştır. Türkiye masonluğunun ilk yayın organı olması yanında siyasi bir hadise sonucunda kapanmak zorunda kalmasıyla öne çıkan bu derginin tarihi gelişimi ve muhtevası araştırmacıların merakını mucip bir mahiyettedir. Dolayısıyla işbu çalışmanın amacı, henüz bakir bir konu olarak Türkiye mason dergiciliğinin tarihçesine değinmekle birlikte spesifik olarak Büyük Şark dergisinin tarihsel açıdan muhteva analizini yapabilmektir. Böylelikle, söz konusu derginin hem Türkiye masonluğu ve Türkiye mason dergiciliğindeki yerinin belirlenmesi hem de ele aldığı konular açısından Cumhuriyet Tarihini ilgilendiren yönlerinin tahlil edilmesi hedeflenmektedir.
Freemasonry is a self-enclosed organization with an esoteric nature that entered the territory of Turkey in the 18th century and has become quite effective. However, Freemasonry stands out as a structure that attaches importance to intellectual activity and the processing of knowledge, with the speeches made in lodges and the topics discussed in Masonic publications. Since the beginning of the Republic era, Turkish masons have also published closed-circuit journals only for their members, in accordance with this perspective, and they have worked in many different disciplines, from politics to theology, from science to history, mainly esotericism. The first Masonic periodical published after the establishment of the Republic was the "Büyük Şark Dergisi" (Journal of the Great Orient). This journal was discontinued in 1935, in parallel with the suspension of Turkish Freemasonry, so that no Masonic publications could be published for a long time. The historical development and the content of this journal, which stood out as the first publication of Turkish Freemasonry and had to be discontinued due to a political event, arouses the curiosity of researchers. Therefore, the aim of this study is mainly to make an analysis of the historical content of the "Büyük Şark" (Great Orient) magazine, while mentioning the history of Turkish Masonic journalism which is an unstudied subject. In this way, it is aimed to determine the importance of the aforementioned journal in Turkish Freemasonry and Turkish Masonic journalism, and to analyze the aspects related to the History of the Republic in terms of the subjects it included.
