Abstract:

The readability level of the texts in the textbooks is a very important factor in terms of the effectiveness of the related texts. As a matter of fact, the readability level of a text is an important indicator of its suitability for the class level to be used. In this study, an examination was carried out on the readability levels of the texts on the National Struggle and Ataturk theme of the secondary school Turkish textbooks used in the 2020-2021 academic year. Within the scope of the study, three different readability formulas were used to determine the readability levels of the reading texts in the theme. The research data were obtained from the texts on the theme of National Struggle and Ataturk in a total of 6 Turkish textbooks used in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Description method was used in the research. The data of the study were obtained by document review and analyzed using three different readability formulas presented in the literature. As a result of the research, it was determined that the readability levels of the texts on the theme of the National Struggle and Ataturk accumulated in the middle, educational and high school levels according to the formulas used. Again, it was determined that the readability difficulty levels of the texts examined in the study did not show an increase from lower class levels to upper class levels. According to these results, it was concluded that the readability levels of the texts used in the Turkish textbooks on the theme of National Struggle and Ataturk were not suitable for grade levels.
