Refik Halid Karay başta roman ve hikâye olmak üzere anı, deneme, fıkra gibi pek çok edebî türde yetkin eserler vermiş bir sanatçıdır. İlk eserlerini millî edebiyat döneminde vermeye başlayan sanatçı ele aldığı konular kadar üslubuyla da dikkat çekmiştir. Rahat ve yalın bir üslupla oluşturduğu son derece renkli betimlemeleri ve oluşturduğu derin karakterinden dolayı Türkçeyi en güzel kullanan edebiyatçılardan biri olarak gösterilir. Anadolu ve köy hayatı Türk edebiyatında Refik Halid’den önce ele alınmıştı. Ama Anadolu’nun karikatür anlatımlardan kurtulması ve realist bir gözle ele alınması onunla mümkün olmuştur. Memleket Hikâyeleri ve Gurbet Hikâyeleri bu alandaki en yetkin eserler olarak gösterilebilir.
Daha üniversite yıllarında Anadolu’ya seyahat eden ve İstanbul’un dışındaki hayatı gözlemlemeyi seven Refik Halid, 1913 - 1918 yılları arasında Anadolu’da, 1922 - 1938 yılları arasında Suriye’de sürgün hayatı yaşamıştır. Eskici adlı kısa öyküyü Suriye sürgününün son günlerinde kaleme almıştır. Bu kısa hikâyede bir sürgünün yalnızlığını ve günden güne artan memleket hasretini çok çarpıcı bir şekilde dile getirmiştir. Bu çarpıcı anlatımın kaynağı elbette ki yazarın gurbet üzerine acı ve uzun deneyimidir. Hikâyedeki gurbet duygusu, bir yaşlı eskici ve bir çocuk kahramanın karşılaşmasıyla çöl ortasında çaresizliğin büyük bir büstü gibi belirir. Bu büstü böylesine dokunaklı kılan hem konu hem de malzeme olan olan “dil”dir.
Edebî metin incelemesinde en büyük sorunlardan biri yöntem sorunudur. Yöntemi iyi belirlenmemiş bir eleştiri çoğu kere metnin mevzusunu ve zenginliğini ortaya çıkarmak yerine daha da muğlâklaştırır. Bu makalede hikâye incelemesi için örnek bir çerçeve çizilmiş ve Eskici hikâyesi bu doğrultuda incelenmiştir. Eseri oldukça yalın ele alan yazarın hikâye unsurlarını kullanma biçimi araştırılarak eserin ilk okunuşta göze çarpmayan ustalıklı kurgusu ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır.
Refik Halid Karay is a talented author who has written quality works in a variety of literary genres, including main novels and short stories with memoirs, essays, and anecdotes. The author gained prominence for both his style and the issues he covered when he first began to publish his works during the time of national literature. He is regarded as one of the best author in using Turkish language because of the vivid descriptions he produced using a relaxed and uncomplicated approach, as well as the complex characters he developed. Before Refik Halid, Turkish literature covered Anatolia and peasant life. However, he made it feasible to represent Anatolia realistically and do away with cartoon narrations.“Memleket Hikâyeleri” and “Gurbet Hikâyeleri” can be shown as the most competent works in this field.
Refik Halid, who travelled to Anatolia during his university years and enjoyed observing life outside of Istanbul, lived in exile in Anatolia between 1913 and 1918, and in Syria between 1922 and 1938. In the final days of his exile from Syria, he authored the short story Eskici. In this short story, he masterfully captured the exile's loneliness and his growing longing for his native land, which was increasing day by day. This striking narration is caused by the author's long and painful experience of homesickness. When an elderly guy and a young hero cross paths in the middle of the desert, the sensation of homesickness in the story manifests as a large bust of despair. “Language”, which is both the subject and the substance of this figure, is what gives it its poignant quality.
One of the biggest problems in literary text analysis is the problem of method. When a critique is poorly stated, it frequently hides rather than reveals the text's complexity and subject. In this article, a model framework for narrative analysis was created, and Eskici short story was then analyzed within it. The author's usage of the tale components was examined, and an attempt was made to elucidate the work's masterful fiction, which did not immediately stand out upon first reading.
