Abstract:

Media constitutes one of the areas where the cultural and social codes of gender roles are produced the most. Television is one of the tools that most affect the masses in this medium. In television programs, dominant gender codes are conveyed to the audience on a discursive platform and gender roles related to femininity are reproduced. In this study, one of the recently popular food programs, which is among the appearances of the mother-in-law discourse in the media, is examined and it is based on the assumption that this program is not just a cooking contest, but that the traditional gender roles attributed to women are reproduced and reinforces the dominant patriarchal ideology. In the study, the five-week sections of Zuhal Topal and Sofrada program selected through random sampling were included. Using the qualitative research method, the discourses and speeches produced in the content of the program were written and analyzed with critical discourse analysis. In the program, analyzes were made regarding the patriarchal discourse and the bride-mother-in-law relationship constructed through this discourse.In the study, it was concluded that there is a consensus between brides and mother-in-law in the production of the male-dominated discourse in the daytime program and that being an "ideal bride" coincides with masculine norms.
