Abstract:

The documentary cinema is a reality-oriented area that provides information and documentation using the technical and aesthetic elements of the cinema. The stories that the documentary films tell are real and they create their narrative languages on the basis of realities. With this article, the definition of the documentary cinema, the framework and the story in the documentary cinema are discussed in the context of the documentary story "Cobain: Montage of Heck". The documentary, which is analyzed, tells the story of the American singer and songwriter Kurt Cobain. This article analyses how Kurt Cobain’s life, how it was visually built with the narrative and instrumentality of the documentary, and how the possibilities of the technique and narrative are evaluated. With such an analysis in the documentary cinema, the study of how the story was built, how the narrative structure was established, a kind of opening for qualified documentary narrative is sought. It is important to try to determine the best technical and narrative patterns, without neglecting the documentary nature of the documentary film. The "Cobain: Montage of Heck" documentation, selected through targeted sampling, was analyzed with the specific technical parameters, documentation and image analysis methods. The specific technical parameters are: film information and subject, image design, fiction, sound and music, interview use, archive use and animation use. Parameters have brought a systematicity to the analysis of the document, each parameter is given by dividing it into the subtitles in the analysis section of the document. Parameters also form research questions of the study.
