Çocuğun bilişsel, sosyal ve psikomotor gelişimi üzerinden etkili olan mekânın, çocuğun merak duygusunu ve deneyimleyerek öğrenme isteğini desteklemesi önemlidir. Mekân çocuğun günlük ihtiyaçlarını güvenli ve verimli bir şekilde gerçekleştirmesine imkân tanımalıdır. Çocuğun kullanıcı olduğu mekânlarda çocuğun gereksinimlere bağlı olarak birçok standardın değişmesi ve yeni tasarım yaklaşımların benimsenmesi gerekmektedir. Tasarımcının mekânı tasarlarken çocuğun gözünden dünyaya bakmayı öğrenmeli, onun algılama şeklini anlamalıdır. Fakat günümüzde mekân içerisinde çocukların gereksinimlerinin tam olarak karşılanmadığı, çocuklar için uygun atmosferin sağlanmadığı görülmektedir. Bu sebeple tasarımcının eğitim sürecinde çocuğun gereksinimlerini iyi anlamış, varlık çerçevesinin kavramış olması önemli bir noktadır. Bu farkındalık ve nitelikle meslek hayatının içerisinde bulunulması gerekmektedir. Bu noktada çalışmada tasarımın belirleyici faktörlerinden olan çocuk kullanıcının tasarım eğitimi sürecinde ne ölçüde yer aldığının tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Tasarım temelli meslek eğitimi alan, farklı ölçeklerde mekân üreten; Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi şehir ve bölge planlama, peyzaj mimarlığı, mimarlık ve iç mimarlık bölümlerinden 161 öğrenci ile anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Veriler betimleyici ve içerik analize ile değerlendirilmiş, karşılaştırma için ki-kare testi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda çocuk kullanıcının eğitim programı içerisinde sınırlı yer bulduğu, verilen derslerin içeriklerinde çocuğa değinilmesine karşın öğrencilerin kendilerini yeterli düzeyde yetkin bulmadıkları tespit edilmiştir.
Spaces should trigger children's curiosity and allow them to learn through experience because they have a significant impact on their cognitive, social, and psychomotor development. Spaces should allow children to meet their daily needs safely and efficiently. Spaces used by children should adopt new standards and design approaches based on their needs. Designers should look at the world through the eyes of children and understand their perceptions and needs when designing spaces. However, today, spaces are far from fully meeting children's needs and providing a suitable atmosphere for them. Therefore, it is important for designers to understand the needs of children during the education process and grasp the existence framework. This awareness and qualification should be present throughout their professional lives. At this point, this study aimed to determine to what extent design education addressed child users. The sample consisted of 161 students from the departments of city and regional planning, landscape architecture, interior architecture, and architecture of the Faculty of Architecture of Karadeniz Technical University. The data were collected using a survey and analyzed using descriptive and content analysis. The chi-square test was used for comparison. The results showed that the undergraduate courses rarely addressed child users. Although some courses focused on child users, they did not find themselves competent enough.
