In Pakistan sectarianism is a major threat factor in the social, political, religious, and security order of the country. For the last 27 years the sectarian conflict in Pakistan resulted into hundreds of deaths. But not all the areas of Pakistan are affected by the sectarianism. So this paper strive to understand that why some areas have high rate of sectarian violence as compared to other areas, and which factors have prevented the sectarian violence in many areas and why some areas are more prone to the sectarian conflict. So two structurally similar cities Mianwali and Dera Ismail Khan are selected for a comparative study. In Dera Ismail Khan about 22% of the total population is consisted of Shia Muslims, while in Mianwali about 18% of the total population is consisted of Shia Muslims. Both cities have very different rate of sectarian violence as only one person died in Mianwali, while in Dera Ismail khan number of deaths in sectarian violence are above 500. This paper is looking at sectarian incidents from 2005 to 2015. Qualitative case comparison method is used in this paper.
