Abstract:

With the establishment of the Republic in 1923, film posters became pivotal in promoting movies, significantly contributing to the growth of the Turkish film industry. As the film sector expanded, the importance of advertising and promoting films grew, leading to the development of more sophisticated movie posters in terms of both production techniques and visual content. In the early days of Turkish cinema, movie posters were crafted using traditional methods, but over time, technological advancements ushered in a shift towards computer-aided design techniques, and these parallel developments are evident when examining the history of Turkish cinema posters. The study at hand specifically zooms in on the cinema of the early Republican era, spanning from 1923 to 1940. In this context, it employs artificial intelligence to analyze film posters. A primary subject of analysis is the poster for "İstanbul Sokaklarında" (Muhsin Ertuğrul, 1931), the first film for which a designed poster was created during the early Republican period. Additionally, the study conducts an analysis of a redesigned version of the same poster using an AI algorithm. Both the original and redesigned posters undergo a comprehensive analysis, encompassing their structure, design, message, and content. By harnessing AI algorithms, this research aims to shed light on how modern approaches in poster design can be applied to film posters from the early Republican period, effectively marrying traditional aesthetics with contemporary techniques and technologies.
